In the 1800s, a lot of urban furniture such as fire hydrants, lampposts and grates were made of solid material. The urban furniture had to last for many years and sometimes for several centuries.
At that time, much of the urban furniture was built in cast iron. A wise choice of building material, as cast iron benches, for example, have become long-lasting successes.

Cast iron is virtually indestructible, which is due to the large amount of carbon, which, together with metal fermentation, means that the iron almost never rusts. Therefore, back in the 1800s, the Copenhagen bench could be over 100 years old.
